We opened our store in August 1997. We were originally inspired to open a deli where people could purchase fresh, quality, delicious meats and cheeses. We knew that we would need to diversify in order to make it work. Using the same quality meats and cheeses we came up with sixteen sandwiches on our menu to capture the lunch business. Today we have more than thirty-five sandwiches on our menu and if you like you can still create your own sandwich.
We started out as a European deli but, Boise wasn't ready for us. We decided to continue with the sandwiches. We are still constantly striving to bring our customers the best quality products possible. We roast our own roast beef, corned beef, and the chicken for our chicken salad sandwiches and grilled chicken sandwiches. We make our own salads fresh to order. We make our own potato and pasta salad from scratch right here at Deli George! We bake our cookies fresh every day. We have heard that many people compare us to a New York deli. They must have the freshest products too. We recently moved to the other side of Boise to obtain a larger facility. The move has proved fruitful.
Why our Sign is Upside Down?
A lot of people ask us this. Here is the official explanation:
When we first opened our restaurant, the sign-painter took the canvas home and realized when he returned that the letters were on the sign upside-down. Rather than buy a new canvas for the building and repaint the sign, we decided that the upside down sign was eye catching and decided to keep it. Since people still "inform" us that our sign is upside down all the time, we figure our logic was sound. We still have the old upside down sign inside our new location and purposely made the new sign upside down.
